20 essential oils for a fabulous summer

#Summer is a prime season for self-care and I love essential oils for simple DIY elixirs for my summer skin and beauty rituals. Ditch the chemicals and sprays, be good to your skin's micro biome and the planet, and nourish your skin to reflect your inner glow.

Whether you’re soaking up vitamin D by the pool, savoring grilled goodies at the park, or centering yourself in the great outdoors with a little forest bathing, capture the benefits of sunny days with essential oils by your side.

Check out our essential oil must-haves for summer and learn how to elevate your self-care game this season!

Winter Skin Recovery

1. Exfoliant dull, dry skin and reveal fresh, vibrant skin with a home-made scrub. This can be used on lips (massage gently), elbows, knees, heels, finger nails, and anywhere that needs a little extra buffing before you hit the beach.

2. Moisturize with nourishing, clean masks for hair, face, and body. Keep it simple with doTERRA's Body Oil or Night Time roman chamomile body oil which can be used on the body and hair. If using on hair, add a drop of tea tree and rosemary and massage into scalp. Wrap head with a damp warm towel and relax for 20 minutes. Follow with a regular shampoo and rinse in cool water to help seal the hair follicle.

These are my top 10 picks for a FABULOUS summer full of celebrations with no down time.

  • Rose essential oil

  • Body blend essential oil

  • Cedarwood essential oil

  • Citronella essential oil

  • Cypress essential oil

  • Eucalyptus oil

  • Geranium essential oil

  • Roman Chamomile essential oil

  • Grapefruit essential oil

  • Helichrysum essential oil

  • Lavender essential oil

  • Lemon essential oil

  • Lemongrass essential oil

  • Lime essential oil

  • Wild Orange essential oil

  • Peppermint essential oil

  • Rosemary essential oil

  • Hawaiian Sandalwood essential oil

  • Spearmint essential oil

Here are the ways I like to use them.

Satisfy your skin

Protecting your skin is a must when the sun’s blazing. Along with making sure to include doTERRA's SUN suncare line in your skin care routine, face the summer with a healthy, glowing look!

  • After-hours exfoliation with Lemon: Protect your skin from sun damage with a DIY nighttime exfoliant. Mix 1 tablespoon jojoba oil with 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, ⅓ cup granulated sugar, and 4 drops Lemon essential oil. Gently apply the scrub to your face and massage in a circular motion for about 1 minute. Rinse and then moisturize.

  • Hydrating face mask with Helichrysum: Glow alongside the sun with a glistening complexion! Mix ¼ cup aloe vera gel, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, and 3 drops Helichrysum essential oil. Apply to your face and wear for at least 10 minutes to get maximum moisture. Rinse and shine!

  • Body balm with Geranium and Grapefruit: Sun exposure can cause damage to your skin even if you avoid sunburn. Add 3 drops each of Geranium and Grapefruit to your favorite doTERRA Spa body butter and apply to your skin for a healthy dose of hydration.

  • Dewy skin care with Hawaiian Sandalwood and Wild Orange: Banish dry skin with a super-hydrating skin care routine. Add Hawaiian Sandalwood essential oil to your face wash and moisturizer and Wild Orange to your night cream to get in on a natural glow. I love adding a couple drops of these two oils in my body wash to leave me softly scented out of the shower and ready for fun. These oils are also natural aphrodisiacs so let the good times roll!

  • Stellar-smelling sunscreen with Carrot Seed: Give sun protection a sensational scent by adding 2-3 drops of Carrot Seed essential oil to your facial moisturizer.

PRO TIPS: When using essential oils in the summer, exercise caution with oils that can make you more sensitive to the sun’s rays. To avoid a negative reaction, stay out of the sun for at least 12 hours after application. View our photosensitivity guide to learn how to safely use these oils.

Tame your mane

Bright sun, salty water, pool chemicals: what do these things have in common? They can all attack your hair. Treat your tresses to mitigate the damage that can come from your summer activities.

  • Scalp treatment with chamomile and Eucalyptus: Show your scalp some love before you show off your mermaid hair! Add 1 drop each of Chamomile and Eucalyptus essential oils to your shampoo. Rub into your scalp to eliminate unwanted buildup with a cooling sensation. Roman Chamomile and lavender also make an amazing assist to sleep when you're not in your own bed or over-tired from too much fun and can't seem to let your brain wind-down. Simply add two drops of lavender and roman chamomile to your diffuser and / or massage 1 drop of each in some body oil in your palms and apply to the temples, back of the neck, shoulders, and bottom of the feet.

  • DIY mermaid hair spray with Rosemary, Lavender, and Cedarwood: Bring on the beachy vibes without skimping on the nourishing ingredients with this DIY hair spray.

  • Serum that smooths the frizzies with Geranium: Combat the humidity and tackle tangly tresses when you add 1 drop of Geranium to your go-to hair oil. Sandalwood is also AMAZING at helping to repair and return moisture to chemically or sun damaged hair and nails. Simply add a drop or two to your finger tips and massage into ends of hair and nails. You'll smell great and get a subtle scent of sandalwood every time you toss your hair.

Chill out in the summer heat Need some time to cool off after soaking up the sun? Choose any of these icy oils so you can take part in your favorite summer activities without melting away.

  • Icy roll-on with Peppermint: Roll on brisk, invigorating Peppermint essential oil to cool down after a hot afternoon. Take an empty 15 ml essential oil bottle, fill it with 20 drops peppermint oil and fractionated coconut oil. Add a spray cap or roller top and your all set. Apply to cool the temples, relieve a headache (keep away from eyes and inner nose or ears), roll over your stomach to relief and upset tummy or cramps or relief car sickness or nausea. Roll onto sore muscles for cooling relief. Dilute with more fractionated coconut oil for children or those with sensitive skin.

  • Frozen towels with Eucalyptus: Whether you’re playing sports or sitting on the sidelines, protect yourself from getting overheated with an ice-cold towel. Add 5-8 total drops of Eucalyptus to a damp washcloth or hand towel. Pop it in the freezer for 15 minutes, then wear it around your neck.

  • Amazing mocktails and cocktails: if you haven't tried a refreshing drink with essential oils, you are missing out! Check my previous blog post here for a few of my favs including a Margarita with lime, Moscow Mule with lime, and Blackberry Mojito.

Venture through the great outdoors

Plan a staycation and explore Mother Nature’s wonders from your own backyard. Summer is a prime time to get outside and reconnect with the earth.

  • Outdoor wipe-down with Citronella, Lemongrass, and Lime: Get your outdoor furniture summer ready. In an 8-ounce bottle, combine 10 drops each of Citronella and Lemongrass, plus 5 drops each of Lime and Spearmint. Fill the bottle to the top with water, spray furniture, and then wipe down.

  • Post-hike massage with Eucalyptus and Cypress: After exploring nature with friends, soothe tired muscles with this peppy DIY massage oil. Combine fractionated coconut oil or body oil blend with 4 drops each of Eucalyptus and Cypress and massage on desired area. This is almost like a forest bath!

  • Repel mosquitos and insects with Citronella oil. Bugs hate the fresh scent of this oil so you can apply it to window screens, add a few drops to your Pilot diffuser and take outside with you, or apply to your hat, back of neck, or on exposed skin to discourage insects from landing on you. You may need to re-apply after a few hours, if you're sweating a lot, or if you've been in the water.

And of course, let's not forget the basics. All health arises from nutrition and the gut so stay true to a few simple routines to enhance the foundation for your natural glow. Drink clean water, take a wholefood supplement and get your fruits and veggies, move your body and breathe EVERY DAY, rest deeply, minimize stress, don't smoke, and take time to connect with family and friends. These all impact our radiance and can vastly improve how the above natural balms work for your needs.

I hope to see you at a Retreat this summer but if not, have a glorious season and keep looking for reasons to celebrate. Until next time, my friends!
